Rob Huff close to title with double-podium at Mantorp Park
Mantorp Park - 02/10/20
Race 1: 2nd
Race 2: 2nd
Race 3: 4th
Rob Huff is just 14 points behind, and in close contention for the 2020 STCC TCR Scandinavia drivers' championship with just one race to go, following a strong weekend at Mantorp Park - scoring two second-place finishes in his Lestrup Racing Team Volkswagen Golf.
Rob Huff qualified in second and third in his all-new Volkswagen Motorsport Golf GTI TCR, acquired since the last races as the team chased down a power-limiting gremlin in his previous car.
Huff made the most of his high-starting position in the first two races to finish second both times, overhauling previous points leader Robert Dahlgren's Cupra in the standings.
Huff's car didn't quite have the pace to get past the Audi of Tobias Brink, who won the first two heats, with the Mantorp Park circuit favouring the longer wheelbase, lower drag RS 3 LMS over the Golf.
In the third race, Huff started from seventh on the grid, with the top eight of Race 2 reversed, he quickly worked his way up to fifth on the opening lap, before getting involved in a five-lap battle with the Honda of Mattias Andersson. Huff eventually made his way past down the inside at the Paris corner, and then comfortably pulled a gap to finish in fourth, but had been held back too much to do anything about the top three.
Huff's points haul from the weekend moves him to a clear second in the championship, just 14 points behind Tobias Brink, with 80 points still available from the season finale at the Ring Knutstorp, located in the southernmost part of Sweden, which hosts the final races next Saturday.
Rob Huff said:
"I'm very happy with the weekend. The team did a fantastic job with the car, and the Lestrup Racing Team Volkswagen did exactly what I wanted both in qualifying and race day. And thanks to Volkswagen Motorsport for turning around a new car for us .
"We had great pace in qualifying; unfortunately we weren't quite as quick as the Audi here at Mantorp Park, but we knew it was an Audi circuit coming in.
"In the first race, Brink's tyres were fading at the end, and I was closing in on him. If we had another two laps, I think we could have got him.
"In Race 2, not a lot happened from my perspective; we worked hard to try and claw him in, but this time we couldn't quite get to him this time.
"I had a good start in Race 3 and made up a few spots, then made a nice move on Mattias and managed to get away from Tobias to make sure we were able to catch up a bit in the points.
"It's a quick turnaround to the final race at Knutstorp, again a circuit I've never been to, but we know the Audi will get compensation weight based on their results this weekend - that should put us in with a fighting chance of winning both the drivers' and teams' titles."
