World Champion Huff takes on Silverstone Classic in historic Mini Cooper S
Reigning FIA World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff will race a historic Austin Mini Cooper S at the Silverstone Classic – the ‘World’s Biggest Motor Racing Festival’ – this weekend (26-28 July).
Now in its 23rd year, the annual Silverstone Classic has established itself as a glittering highlight in the motorsport calendar. It’s an unmissable occasion for drivers and enthusiasts alike and last year’s event was hailed as the biggest race meeting ever to be staged.
The three-day Silverstone Classic festival will showcase a full spectrum of motorsport history, It promises unprecedented numbers of race entries, world record commemorative parades, classic car displays and spectacular music concerts, culminating with 24 fiercely fought races on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.
Huff, who emphatically sealed the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) crown with the RML-led works Chevrolet team in 2012, quenches his unassailable thirst for racing by piloting an eclectic array of machinery in his spare time.
At this weekend's Silverstone Classic, (26-28 July) the 32-year old will get back behind the wheel of the historic 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S he took to a surprise victory at this year's Brands Hatch Historic Masters Festival.
Huff will compete in the new Trans-Atlantic Touring Car races, where American V8 thunder will be pit against plucky British icons like the Mini and Lotus Cortinas. And he's under pressure to emulate the success he and team-mate Des Smail achieved at Brands Hatch earlier in the year.
Huff said: “Silverstone Classic has developed into an incredible event in recent years, with star-studded capacity grids competing in an action-packed programme of racing and masses of off-track entertainment. The Classic is another great way to socialise with some true motorsport enthusiasts and it will be a thrill to race the Mini Cooper S – a British icon – in the Trans-Atlantic Touring Car race on Saturday (27 July).
“The weekend might be a decent shakedown for the Goodwood Revival in September, but having taken the Mini to an unexpected victory at Brands Hatch, the pressure is on to repeat that result at Silverstone!”
Qualifying for the Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy will begin at 13.55 on Friday 26 July, with the two races scheduled for 14.00 Saturday 27 July and 16.20 Sunday 28 July.
Action from 24 enthralling races will be shown in a special hour-long highlights programme on ITV4 and ITV4HD, with provisional timeslots of 21.00 Thursday 15 August, 9.00 Sunday 18 August, 20.00 Wednesday 21 August and 20.00 Monday 9 September.
