Top tens in tough races in China for Rob Huff

NingboNingbo - 13/09/19 Race 1: 10th Race 2: 7th Race 3: DNF

Rob Huff battles through the field in action-packed weekend

Rob Huff picked up a tenth and a seventh, a great reward after problematic qualifying in the latest round of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car at the Ningbo International Speedpark circuit in China.

Sad to be missing his annual jaunt to the Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom, Huff was happy to racing again after a two-month break – getting behind the wheel of his Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen Motorsport Golf GTI TCR at the two-year-old, 4.0km circuit near the Ningbo city, home to seven million people.

Unfortunately for Huff, an issue in qualifying saw him qualify down in 17th position, while the car had the potential for more pace. After making a great start, and avoiding some trouble up ahead, Huff quickly leapt to tenth in the order, but in a rather processional race, that’s as far as he’d be able progress.

On Sunday, qualifying went the other way for all of the Volkswagen drivers, with Huff now starting from 20th place, but in what was one of the most chaotic touring car races in recent years, Huff was able to charge his way through the various incidents to work his way up 13 places to finish seventh, the best result for any of the four Volkswagen drivers during the course of the weekend.

In the final race, Huff made another great start and was again charging up the order, but just five laps in while running in tenth place, Huff had to stop the car due to damage to the radiator he sustained in the previous race.

Rob Huff said:

“It’s been a tough weekend, but we managed to scrape together some good results in the races, so that only shows what we could have done if we’d been able to qualify further up the grid.

“The races were quite exciting, I think there was some interesting driving going on, but for me, it was key to try and keep my nose clean – ultimately, we couldn’t avoid all of it, and that cost me a result in Race 3, but I’m still happy with how we performed in the races.

“We were also carrying maximum compensation weight this weekend due to the FIA calculation, and this wasn’t the kind of circuit where it was helpful to carry 60kg around, as top speed is very important at Ningbo, as you could see the Hondas struggled as well and they were on the same weight as us.”
