Rob Huff back on plan after high-points scoring weekend

NingboNingbo - 29/09/18 Race 1: 6th Race 2: 5th Race 3: 6th

31 points in the first weekend of a two-part visit to China

Rob Huff had a strong race meeting at this weekend’s round of the FIA World Touring Car Cup at the Ningbo International Speedpark in China, taking three top ten results in the three races so score useful points in the championship.

After worrying signs in free practice that the handling issues which made the last weekend in Slovakia had returned, Huff’s Sébastien Loeb Racing team transformed the team’s Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR car overnight, with the Briton qualifying in ninth place for Saturday’s race.

Huff then charged through the order, finding the race set-up even stronger than the qualifying trim, and settled down into a rhythm to take sixth place.

On Sunday, Huff managed to break into the Hyundai-Honda love affair at the top of the time sheets, spoiling their party after managing to get into the top five qualifying shootout with his Volkswagen Golf.

In Race 2, from the reversed grid, Huff fought his way to fifth, despite being involved in some rough battles and the victim of some risky manoeuvres.

In the final race, Huff crossed the line in sixth position, again involved in some tough fights, holding off the chasing Audis and Cupras which were carrying less compensation weight.

Huff scored 31 points over the two days, his third best race weekend of the season to-date, and solidifies his ninth-place position in the championship standings.

Rob Huff said:

“Considering how the weekend started, to come away with 31 points was a very good result. The one-lap performance of our car wasn’t great, but the race performance was brilliant. We really lost out with the red flag in Race 3 (due to kerb damage), as before that I was pulling away from the Audis and reeling Norbi (Michelisz) and (Denis) Dupont in, and then when we stopped everyone got to put on fresh tyres, which I think is a rule we should change. It definitely didn’t work in our favour.

“To come away with 31 points considering we were 17th in Free Practice 2 is great. We’ve worked harder this weekend than we’ve ever worked to really find the speed, the speed’s usually come quite naturally to us except in Slovakia, and this weekend we’ve had to look deep into the bucket to get the best result possible.”
