LADA Sport finishes in the points at challenging Shanghai circuit
A week is a long time in motorsport and, after tasting victory for the first time in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Beijing, the LADA Sport team had an incident-packed day at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday (12 October).
James Thompson achieved a best tenth-place result to take one more point for the Russian manufacturer in race two, while Mikhail Kozlovskiy shadowed his more experienced teammate in 11th.
Last week’s winner Rob Huff was less fortunate. The Briton fell foul of Gianni Morbidelli on lap five while running inside the top ten and with the prospect of making up more ground, only for the Italian to hit him firmly in the rear and push him wide into the tyre barrier at Turn 1.
As for the first race of the day, Thompson and Kozlovskiy both suffered mechanical troubles and retired in quick succession.
Huff battled on from 15th on the grid and nudged into the points after executing a chain of superb passing moves, pressurising Serbian Dusan Borkovic into a mistake at Turn 1. Unfortunately, contact as the Chevrolet driver returned to the track resulted in a puncture on Huff’s LADA Granta Sport, the former World Champion ending his race in the pit lane.
After two weeks on Chinese soil, LADA Sport has trophies and points in the bag and a trying Shanghai weekend would not dampen the Russian team’s spirits.
Team boss, Victor Shapovalov, said: “We can accept this mixed fortune from this weekend after Beijing. James (Thompson) drove really well and the team did some great work, so I am happy with that.”
Thompson was positively upbeat having really enjoyed race two, saying: “I just needed one more lap and I’m sure I would have passed both Hugo Valente and Dusan Borkoic but, from the back of the grid, I am happy with where I finished in race two.”
The team now returns to Russia before regrouping for the penultimate weekend in the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) calendar at the legendary and evocative Suzuka Circuit in Japan (25-26 October).
