Improved LADA gives Huffy optimism for Argentina assault
Argentina’s Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo is the next port of call for the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and former World Champion Rob Huff goes to South America (2-3 August) with heightened optimism for his LADA Sport LUKOIL team.
Nestled on the outskirts of Termas de Rio Hondo in the province of Santiago del Estero, the 4.8km circuit was officially inaugurated in 2008 and was featured on the WTCC calendar for the very first time last year.
Huff will be hoping the stars align for him on the South American continent, after storming drives from lowly grid positions failed to yield results for the 2012 World Champion during the WTCC’s maiden visit to Argentine soil in 2013.
The 2014 season has also been a battle at the best of times, but the six-week break has given Huff an opportunity to take a step back and indulge in other forms of motorsport, and a victorious excursion at the Silverstone Classic with a Ford Mondeo from the British Touring Car Championship’s (BTCC) spectacular Super Touring era has certainly kindled his desire to push onwards and upwards in his day job in the WTCC.
In addition, the LADA Sport LUKOIL team has been working flat out to fettle its TC1-spec Granta Sport and it is hoped that an array or new development parts and a lighter construction will result in significant gains on the racetrack.
“I used the six-week break to regroup and relax and, while I’ve really enjoyed my time away and racing in great events like the Silverstone Classic, I’m really keen to getting my head back into the WTCC, said Huff. “This is only the second time we’ve been to Argentina and my last visit was pretty miserable because what could go wrong did go wrong. It will be a race against time to home in on the perfect setup, but I’m excited to see whether the hard work LADA Sport LUKOIL has put in during the break will yield results. I have confidence in the team’s ability and I’d love to score some good points at the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo to boost my championship position.”
