Huffy achieves breakthrough podium for LADA Sport LUKOIL in Argentina

- Race 1: Race 2:

Rob ‘Huffy’ Huff is the toast of Argentina after an incredible drive in the second FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) race of the weekend saw him achieve a breakthrough maiden podium for his LADA Sport LUKOIL team at the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo on Sunday (3 August).

Everything came together for Huffy in the final race of the weekend after finishing seventh earlier in the day and it was a matter of driving smart and fast to capitalise on starting from pole position.

In front of a crowd of 38,000 people, the Brit led for nine of the twelve laps, focused on making no mistakes and racing cleanly in his red LUKOIL-sponsored machine.

With three laps to go, the former WTCC Champion allowed a charging Jose Maria Lopez through in his Citroen to focus on preventing the works Hondas from catching and instigating a late race fight.

It was the right decision to make, and three laps later he was crossing the line for a well-deserved podium finish. The jubilation was felt not only by Huffy, but his dedicated team of engineers and mechanics.

Champagne and celebrations were the order of the day for all, and no one was going to be able to bring Huffy and the LADA Sport LUKOIL team down from cloud nine.

“I am so happy to be able to give the LADA Sport LUKOIL team its first WTCC podium here in Argentina,” said Huff. “A lot of improvements went into the car, fantastic team work and we were much more competitive. The podium celebration was as enjoyable as any I have ever had. The crowd really got into it all, they were singing and dancing, great celebrations all round. To be able to do this for the guys on the team really means a lot.

“I am very optimistic for the remaining races, Beijing is tight and twisty with no need for strong aero, which may play to our strengths. Shanghai and Suzuka may be tough, but I really think we could be up for another podium in Macau, or even a race win.”
