Huff switches to 8Star for Daytona race debut
Rob Huff has made a last-minute switch to the 8Star Motorsports team for the 2014 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona next weekend (25-26 January).
Huff – the 2012 FIA World Touring Car Champion – will join Tom Kimber-Smith and 8Star Motorsports team owner and driver Enzo Potolicchio in an ORECA FML09 LMPC prototype for the legendary endurance race at Daytona International Speedway in Florida.
The OCC LASIK-supported racer originally intended to contest the 24-hour enduro under the Starworks Motorsport banner, but opted to switch to the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) title-winning 8Star outfit following a troubled outing in the “Roar Before the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona” test earlier this month.
The door remains open for ‘Huffy’ to return to the Starworks fold for the remaining races in the 2014 International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) TUDOR United SportsCar Championship (USCC) and a final decision will follow the Daytona race.
Huff said: “I’m excited to be making my 24 Hours of Daytona debut next weekend. The limited experience I gained during the “Roar” test was certainly enough to whet my appetite and I cannot wait to get behind the wheel of 8Star Motorsports’ prototype. I wish Peter Baron and the Starworks Motorsport team well, but the uncertainties with the final driver line-up made a switch to 8Star machinery my best option for Daytona.”
