Huff joins Munnich and Basseng for 24 Hours of Dubai assault
Rob Huff will once again adorn ALL-INKL.COM Munnich Motorsport colours while contesting the 2014 Dunlop Dubai 24 Hours endurance race (9-11 January), this time in the team’s FIA GT1-winning Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 alongside former teammates Rene Munnich and Marc Basseng.
The Dubai 24 Hours has quickly established itself as a highlight in the international motorsport calendar and is preparing for its ninth running in January 2014.
Aimed at both professional and gentlemen drivers, a structured class system and liberal technical regulations, plus low costs and a convivial atmosphere all serve to attract a large entry that includes some of the world’s biggest teams, create high levels of competition and a stunning spectacle.
In addition, the Dubai Autodrome provides a dazzling setting for the race. A state-of-the-art facility situated a short distance from central Dubai, its 5.39km configuration boasts a heady combination of long, high-speed straights and technical corners that are designed to test the mettle of even the most experienced of drivers.
Huff – the 2012 FIA World Touring Car Champion – has been eager to expand his horizons by building a career in sportscar racing, having been inspired by his recent success in the 2013 25 Hours of Thunderhill, further outings in the Bathurst 12 Hours in Australia and his upcoming prototype debut in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
The Newmarket driver spearheaded Munnich Motorsport’s inaugural WTCC campaign in 2013, as it embarked on a brand new chapter at the top flight of touring car racing following its sensational FIA GT1 World Championship title success in 2012.
But while the WTCC is set to take on a distinctly Russian flavour for Huff in 2014 as he links up with the manufacturer LADA Sport LUKOIL team, the OCC LASIK-supported driver will reunite with Rene Munnich’s squad to kick off a separate and varied endurance campaign.
Munnich Motorsport’s entry in the A6-Pro class for thoroughbred GT3-spec machines means the outright race win is a viable prospect and, with the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship-winning team behind him, Huff has high hopes for his desert blast.
“My 2014 sportcars campaign is really gathering momentum and will be a fantastic sideline to my full-time programme with LADA Sport LUKOIL in the WTCC,” said Huff. “I had a fantastic season racing with ALL-INKL.COM Munnich Motorsport throughout 2013. We surpassed all expectations and I’m delighted to be reuniting with the team for the 2014 Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai.
“I get a lot of satisfaction from manhandling these monstrously high-powered GT3-spec machines and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the team’s Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. With Munnich Motorsport’s exceptional record of winning the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship title, I believe we can take the victory this weekend.”
