Disastrous end to China trip for Rob Huff at the Wuhan street race

WuhanWuhan - 05/10/18 Race 1: 14th Race 2: 10th Race 3: DNF

One point and a heavily damaged car after gruelling event

Rob Huff had a weekend to forget in the second of the FIA World Touring Car Cup’s races in China, with the Briton scoring a solitary point across the whole weekend as the team struggled with the latest weight changes.

Although the Volkswagen had been handed some success ballast back this weekend, their rivals were even lighter, with the Audi RS 3 LMS, built on the same platform, permitted to run 20kg lighter, with the marque almost dominating the weekend.

A misstep in qualifying on Saturday saw the Sébastien Loeb Racing team running outside of the points throughout the first race, while on Sunday, Huff missed the all-important top twelve qualifying cut-off by just 0.012 seconds.

In the first race on Sunday, Huff made a good start and was up to ninth from 13th on the grid, but was tipped out of the position by Honda driver Ma Qing Hua and fell to 11th, later promoted to tenth after Ma was hit with a time penalty for the incident, which was unfortunately the highlight of the weekend.

In Race 3, Huff was racing in the pack when one of the Audis tipped the Peugeot of Aurélien Comte into the tyre barriers, with Huff coming across the Peugeot unsighted and damaged the front-end of his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, and was then collected by the pack behind, practically destroying his Golf.

That concluded the end of Huff’s weekend, one he’d say he’d very much like to forget.

Rob Huff said:

“It’s literally been a disaster. We need to find some luck at the moment as we’re fresh out of it.

"The second race was going OK, but as before everyone’s driving really erratically. All of the damage to the side of my car is from that race, as I had a Comtoyou Audi who decided to keep his foot flat through three corners and just drove down my side and then took another Audi clean out of the race.

"Then I got hit in the hairpin by a local and lost two places. I had a very nice fight with Yvan (Muller) after that and it was like old times, and that was very enjoyable.

"In the last race I had a bad start, I came around the corner side-by-side with Yvan again through Turns 3, 4 and 5, we gave each other room, and then I arrive at Turn 7 and then parked in front of me is a Peugeot in the wall. I managed to stop the car pretty much, but then we had four big hits in the rear.

"It’s not been my finest weekend in China. It’s been hard work, a bit disappointing, but we’ll come back fighting again.”
