34 passes hand Rob Huff two top ten finishes in WTCR finale

SepangSepang - 13/12/19 Race 1: 23rd Race 2: 9th Race 3: 9th

Rainmaster Rob makes headway in crazy races in Malaysia

Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen Motorsport driver Rob Huff made the most of a set of tough grid positions, to finish ninth in both of the last two races of the year at the Sepang International Circuit, which were run under floodlights, and in the wet.

Qualifying in 23rd for the first race, and 26th for the second and third races, with the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR struggling for pace at the Malaysian circuit, little was expected from Sunday's races - but rain helped turn things around for the Briton, as picking the right tyres and the right place to be on the opening laps turned out to be vital.

Huff finished 23rd in the uneventful first race, which was started behind the safety car, spoiling the best opportunity to make up ground, but in Race 2, things were to get a little wilder.

Picking the correct set-up as the rain started to get heavier, which was a full set of wet tyres, Huff catapulted up the order, but the race was quickly red-flagged after a collision between two of his former team-mates, Nicky Catsburg and Yvan Muller, with Catsburg's car dramatically catching fire.

Huff was now running in tenth when the race restarted, but soon threaded his way forwards to eighth position.

The former champion only dropped a position to eventual champion Norbert Michelisz on lap five, deciding not to race too hard against the Hungarian as he didn't want to get involved in the Hyundai driver's championship battle.

The Briton crossed the line ninth, having progressed 17 places in the race to rescue a top ten result for the Sébastien Loeb Racing team.

In Race 3, Huff made another epic start and was up to 14th by the end of the first lap, and then picked his way forward of the races 14 laps to finish in 11th - which became ninth following a pair of post-race penalties handed to two rivals.

The end result means Rob finishes joint-tenth in the drivers' championship, in a season which was mired by a difficult to start to the campaign for all the Volkswagen team drivers, with Huff's ninth pole position and another podium at his favourite circuit of Macau, a season's highlight.

Rob Huff said:

"It was a difficult day, but the results were good considering where we started. We had a very good start in Race 2, but we lost five places after the red flag because they shuffled us back. I was then stuck behind Yann (Ehrlacher) and Norbi (Michelisz), and I could see Yann was holding Norbi up, but I didn't want to get too involved with Norbi's championship and cause him a problem.

"In Race 3, I made another good start, but I had to go off the track twice to avoid cars that had spun in front of me - both the Comtoyou Cupras were off at Turn 4, and then again at Turn 6 I lost eight places - and then couldn't recover all of them.

"It was a fantastic day for the team, with Johan scoring a P1 and P2 in the second and third races. After a trying season, especially after scoring almost no points during the first three races, I think for us to finish where we all have is a testament to how hard we've worked this year. Thanks to my team-mates and Sébastien Loeb Racing and Volkswagen Motorsport for making it as enjoyable as it can be, in one of the hardest championships in the world."
